Advising Philosophy (click to view more)
Our role in advising is to help you find the information and experiences that will move you in the direction of your choice. Advisors will not “prescribe” answers or programs to you. Extracurricular experiences are integral to career and academic development, and we encourage you to seek opportunities outside of the classroom. We believe academic advising is a collaborative process, and ultimately, you, the student are responsible for your educational experience.
Advising Process
- All new students enter as Pre-Accounting (PACC) majors. (Entering freshmen, entering transfer students, students who change majors, students working on pre-requisites, students working on 2nd degrees)
- PACC majors are advised by the academic coordinator during individual appointments or during group advising with the assistance of faculty and student peer advisors as necessary.
- Each semester (before preregistration advising) the academic coordinator evaluates all junior & senior PACC majors to see if they have met the requirements to change to ACC:
o completion of at least 60 hours applied toward the degree with a 2.60 GPA o completion of ACC 2013, ACC 2023, EC 2113, EC 2123, BL 2413, and BQA 2113 witha 2.60 GPA o completion of ACC 2013 and ACC 2023 with a least a B in each course.
- When a student changes from PACC to ACC, the academic coordinator notifies the registrar of the major change and assigns a faculty advisor to the student.
- ACC majors are distributed evenly to the advising faculty members and will remain with the same advisor until graduation.
- ACC majors meet with faculty advisors during normal preregistration advising periods as listed in the MSU Academic Calendar.
- ACC majors meet with the academic coordinator for any other things that require advisor’s and/or director’s approval (signature). This includes things such as adds, drops, withdrawals, transfer requests, appeals, etc.
- ACC majors may meet with the academic coordinator, faculty advisors and/or professors from class to discuss career and graduate school options, etc.
